How to chose the raw material of springs?

As we all know springs can be made of different materials, but do you know what the different materials have to do with the spring?
When looking for a spring manufacturer to customize the spring, the selection of spring materials should be determined according to the nature of the spring load, stress state, stress size, operating temperature, environmental media, service life, requirements for conductivity and magnetic conductivity, process performance, material sources, and price.

Medium and small springs, especially spiral extension springs, should be given priority to the steel wire after strengthening treatment, with higher strength and good surface quality, fatigue performance than ordinary quenched and tempered steel wire, simple processing, good workmanship, and stable quality.

Carbon spring steel wire and lyre steel wire after cold drawing produce large residual stress, after processing the spring, there is large residual stress, and tempering after the size changes, it is difficult to control the size accuracy. Oil-quenched and tempered steel wire is in the wire drawn to the specified size after the modulation strengthening process, basically, no residual stress exists, after forming the spring by low-temperature tempering, the size change is very small, heat-resistant stability is better than cold-drawn reinforced steel wire.

large and medium-sized springs, for load accuracy and stress, should be selected after cold-drawn steel or cold-drawn polished steel. For load accuracy and lower-stress springs, hot-rolled steel can be used. Steel plate springs are generally used 55Si2Mn, 60Si2MnA, 55SiMnVB, 55SiMnMoV, 60CrMn, 60CrMnB, and other grades of flat steel.

A spiral spring material cross-section should be preferred to a round cross-section. Square and rectangular cross-section materials, withstanding capacity are stronger, have good impact resistance, and can make the spring miniaturized, but the source of materials is less. And higher prices, in addition to the special needs, generally try not to use this material.
